What Decades is asking for

Decades is an open prompt: pick a twentieth-century era and build it. Because the choice is yours, the scoring shifts entirely onto execution — a voter cannot mark you down for choosing the 1970s, but they absolutely will mark you down for a 1970s look with the wrong silhouette.

DTI also runs individual decade themes separately (1920s, 1950s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s TV Show, 2014 Vibes, 2020). If you get the general Decades prompt, you have the freedom to pick whichever era your wardrobe actually supports.

Which decade to pick

Choose by what you own, and by which silhouette is hardest to mistake:

• 1920s — drop waist, straight column, fringe, headband, long beads. The Roaring 20’s Dress set is purpose-built but VIP; a Tassel Top over a straight skirt gets you most of the way free.
• 1950s — nipped waist, full circle skirt, cat-eye liner, headscarf. Very buildable from basics.
• 1980s — huge shoulders, neon, big hair, high-cut leotard shapes. The most forgiving to overdo.
• 1990s — slip dress over a tee, grunge flannel, minimal jewellery, straight hair. Easiest to build, hardest to make legible.
• 2000s — see the Y2K guide; low-rise everything.

The 20s and 50s read fastest from a distance because their silhouettes are extreme. The 90s is the most commonly attempted and the most commonly missed, because minimalism looks like “no effort” if you get one element wrong.

Building it without VIP

Whichever era you take, spend your first three item slots on silhouette, not detail: the waistline position, the skirt shape, the shoulder line. Then spend the next two on hair, which dates an outfit faster than any garment. Only then add jewellery and props.

What loses votes

• Mixing eras. The single biggest failure on this prompt.
• Modern hair. A 1950s dress with straight modern hair reads contemporary.
• Choosing an era you cannot equip. Half a decade is worse than a fully built easier one.
