What Y2K is asking for

Y2K in fashion terms means roughly 1999 to 2004, and it is a mall aesthetic before it is a futuristic one. Low-rise flared or bootcut denim, cropped baby tees with slogans, velour tracksuits, butterfly hair clips, tiny tinted sunglasses, chunky platform sandals, visible thin belts, and pink in every register from bubblegum to hot.

There is a futuristic strand in real Y2K design — the shiny silver bits — but on the DTI runway that strand belongs to Y3K. Keep Y2K warm and nostalgic and let chrome appear only as an accessory, never as the base.

Building it without VIP

• Halter Neck Crop Top, Tied Top or Cutout Tube Top on top.
• Lace-up Flared Jeans for the low-rise flare, or Denim Mini Skirt for the skirt version.
• Cropped Track Jacket over the top for the tracksuit read.
• Hair accessories are the fastest signal in the game for this theme: Basic Hairclips, Butterfly, Bow Hair.
• Star Sunglasses or any small tinted frame; Hoop Earrings; a Micro Purse or Heart Bag.

Buffalo Sneakers and Chunky Platform Sandals both land; the platform is period-correct in a way flats are not.

Colour and silhouette

Bubblegum pink, baby blue, lilac, and denim in every wash. Keep the saturation high but the mood soft. Silhouette is the defining element: the waistband sits low, the top ends high, and there is a visible gap between them. Getting that proportion right matters more than any individual item.

Y2K Popstar variant

There is a separate Y2K Popstar theme in the pool that pushes the same era toward stage costume — more metallic, more bare midriff, headset microphone energy. If you get plain Y2K, stay mall; if you get Y2K Popstar, go stage.

What loses votes

• High-waisted anything. Instantly wrong decade.
• All silver. That is Y3K.
