What Old Hollywood is asking for

The studio era ran roughly from the 1930s through the mid-1950s, and its glamour vocabulary has barely changed since: bias-cut satin gowns that skim the body, fur stoles over bare shoulders, opera-length gloves, a deep red lip, and hair set in waves.

The theme is warm — champagne, gold, ivory, ruby — where modern night-out themes are cool and metallic. That difference is what separates it from City Lights and from Movie Star, which is the contemporary red carpet.

Building it without VIP

• Glamorous Gown, Lady In Red, Lady In White or Elegant Lace Gown as the base — long, fluid and skimming.
• Elegant Lace Gloves to above the elbow. Non-negotiable for the period.
• Fur Stole or Shawl across the shoulders.
• Oval Earrings, Diamond Bracelet or a single strand of pearls — nothing chunky.

Colour and silhouette
