What Jazz Club is asking for

Jazz Club is a place theme, and place themes reward props. The setting is a small, dim, smoky room in the 1940s or 1950s: performers in satin and velvet, patrons in evening wear, brass instruments catching the light, a microphone on a stand.

Almost everybody builds the dress. Very few build the room. The players who place are the ones who add an instrument, a microphone, a cigarette holder or a martini — one prop that says this is a jazz club rather than a formal dinner.

Building it without VIP

• Cocktail Mini Dress, Lady In Red or Slip Dress as the base — satin finish where the material option allows.
• Roaring 20’s Dress if you have it, though it pushes slightly earlier in period.
• Gloves above the elbow. This is the accessory that dates the look correctly.
• Fur Stole or Shawl across the shoulders.
• Props: Electric Guitar is the wrong genre but the right idea; a microphone, a hand fan, or a drink all work.

Hair should be finger-waved or pinned. Half Up Crimped Hair, Vintage Afro Hair and Sweetheart Waves Hair all sit in period.

Colour and silhouette

Midnight blue, burgundy, smoke grey and deep emerald, with brass gold as the metal. Avoid bright colours entirely — the room is dim and the outfit should look like it belongs in it. Silhouette is long and fluid: a bias-cut column, a slit, a draped shoulder.

What loses votes

• No prop. The difference between Jazz Club and a generic gown.
• Modern glamour. Sequins and bodycon read as City Lights.
• Bright colour. Nothing in a smoky basement is neon.
