What Monochrome is asking for
Monochrome is a discipline theme. One hue, applied to everything — clothes, shoes, accessories, and ideally hair and makeup too. What makes it hard is that removing colour variation removes your main tool, so the outfit has to be carried by value (light to dark within the hue) and texture (matte, shine, knit, sheer).
Most players build black-and-white, which technically satisfies the brief and almost never wins, because everyone does it. A committed head-to-toe outfit in a single saturated hue — all red, all green, all lilac — reads as a deliberate choice and stands out on a runway full of greyscale.
Building it without VIP
The method matters more than the items:
- Pick one hue and set every colour-adjustable item to it.
- Vary the value: a darker skirt, a mid-tone top, a light accessory.
- Vary the texture: something knitted (Comfy Sweater), something sheer (Mesh Top), something smooth (Slip Dress or Pencil Skirt).
- Take the hue into hair, makeup and nails if the items allow it. This is the step that separates a good monochrome from a great one.
Good free bases: Basic Corset Top with Layered Skirt, Turtleneck Dress, Bodycon Dress — anything with generous colour options.
Colour and silhouette
Whichever hue you choose, stay inside it completely. One contrasting item breaks the entire premise. Silhouette should be strong and simple, because with colour variation removed, shape becomes the outline that carries the look.
What loses votes
- A contrasting accessory. The one rule you cannot break.
- Black and white. Allowed, but crowded and low-impact.
- One texture throughout. Flat and lifeless without value change.
