What Indie is asking for

The word “indie” has meant three different things in fashion, and DTI’s version is the most recent one: the 2020 indie-kid aesthetic that grew out of TikTok and Pinterest. Its markers are unmistakable — butterflies, mushrooms, smiley faces, chunky colourful rings, mismatched socks, thrifted clothes in colours that fight each other, and a scrapbook-collage feeling.

It is not indie sleaze (2007, muted, flash photography, skinny jeans), and it is not Hipster (2012, mustard and plaid, deliberately drab). Indie is loud, colourful and cheerful.

Building it without VIP

• Baggy Shirt in a bright clashing colour over a Ribbed Tank Top in another.
• Denim Mini Skirt or Baggy Jeans — thrifted denim is the base layer of the whole aesthetic.
• Butterfly accessories are the single most Indie item in the game; wear more than one.
• Rings, bracelets and beads stacked visibly on both hands.
• Bandana Headband or a clip-heavy hairstyle; bright hair colour helps.

Socks matter. If you can get two different legwear items showing, do it — mismatched socks are a defining detail.

Colour and silhouette

Deliberately clashing brights: lime with cherry red, cobalt with sunflower. Nothing should tone. Silhouette is oversized on top, short on the bottom, with visible layering at the neck and wrist.

What loses votes

• A coordinated palette. The clash is the point.
• Muted colour. That is a different indie era.
• No motifs. Butterflies or mushrooms do a huge amount of the recognition work.
