What Hipster is asking for

Hipster is a specific moment — roughly 2010 to 2015, Brooklyn and its imitators — and its uniform is precise even though it pretends not to be. Thick-framed glasses, a beanie worn far back on the head, plaid flannel, cuffed jeans, a canvas tote, layered knits in mustard and rust, and a general air of having assembled the outfit from a thrift shop in ten minutes.

The trick, and the thing that separates a good Hipster build from a lazy one, is that it must look unplanned while actually being planned. Every element should be slightly at odds with the others: a formal shirt under a scruffy knit, a delicate necklace over a lumberjack shirt.

Building it without VIP

• Baggy Shirt or Ripped Cropped Overshirt in plaid over a plain Ribbed Tank Top.
• Collared Sweater or Comfy Sweater in mustard, layered over a Button-Down Shirt with the collar out.
• Cuffed denim — Bootcut Jeans or Baggy Jeans — or Mini Overalls.
• Beanie pushed back, Cat-Eye Glasses or Chunky Oversize Glasses.
• A tote-style bag, a Camera, an Acoustic Guitar or a Music Player as the prop.

Colour and silhouette

Mustard, rust, oatmeal, forest green and mid-wash denim — warm, muted, slightly dusty. Nothing saturated. The silhouette is loose and layered on top, narrow at the ankle, with the cuff exposing the shoe.

What loses votes

• Everything matching. Coordination kills the thrifted read.
• Modern minimalism. Clean and monochrome is Acubi, not Hipster.
• No glasses. They are effectively mandatory for recognition.
