What Gyaru is asking for

Gyaru emerged in 1990s Japan as a rejection of the pale-skinned, demure ideal. The look is the opposite on every axis: tanned skin, bleached or brightly dyed hair teased to maximum volume, dramatic false lashes and heavy lower-lash liner, long decorated nails, and outfits that are glamorous, tight and revealing.

It is regularly confused with other Harajuku-district styles, and the differences are clear once you know them. Decora is childlike and accessory-dense. Fairy Kei is pastel and soft. Gyaru is grown, glamorous and confrontational.

Building it without VIP

• Halter Neck Crop Top, Cutout Tube Top or Gym Baddie Tank Top on top.
• Micro Mini Skirt or Denim Mini Skirt, worn short.
• Fur Coat or a fur-trimmed layer over it — fur is a strong gyaru signal.
• Baddie Nails for the long decorated nails.
• Strappy High Heels or platform boots.
• Layered gold jewellery: Hoop Earrings, Charm Waist Chain, Bracelet Cluster.
• Attitude Makeup or Kissy Makeup for the heavy-eye read.

Hair is decisive: the biggest, blondest, most voluminous style you own. Big Hair, Long Wavy Hair or Crimped Ponytail Hair in bleach blonde.

Colour and silhouette

Bleach blonde, hot pink, gold and white, with leopard print as the signature pattern. The silhouette is short, fitted and layered with volume concentrated entirely at the head.

What loses votes

• Pastel cuteness. That is a different Harajuku substyle.
• Natural hair. Volume and bleach are structural.
• Understated makeup. The eyes are the whole face here.
