What Anime is asking for

“Anime” is enormous, which means the scoring goes to whoever reads fastest. That favours archetypes over specific characters. A magical girl reads to everyone; an obscure character from one show reads to almost nobody, however accurate your build is.

The archetypes worth building, in rough order of how quickly they land:

• Magical girl — pastel frills, ribbons, a wand, an impossible hair colour.
• School uniform — navy and white sailor collar, pleated skirt, red neckerchief.
• Idol — stage costume, bright layers, leg warmers, headset energy.
• Shrine maiden — white top, red hakama-style skirt.
• Mecha pilot — bodysuit, harness, technical panelling.

Building it without VIP

DTI has purpose-built items for several of these:

• Magic Girl Corset, Magic Girl Skirt and Magic Girl Hair — three slots and the archetype is complete.
• School Top, School Skirt and Chic Academia for the uniform route.
• Idol Top, Idol Skirt and Idol Leg Warmers for the idol route.
• Fairy Top, Fairy Heart Skirt for a softer magical read.
• Hair is the fastest anime signal there is: an unnatural, saturated colour in an impossible shape.

Colour and silhouette

Saturated and high-contrast: primary colours, or white-and-navy for the uniform route. Hair in pink, blue, green or lilac. Silhouette is exaggerated — bigger bows, shorter skirts, larger sleeves than a real garment would have.

What loses votes

• A niche character. Recognition is the whole scoring axis.
• Natural hair colour. The cheapest way to lose the read.
• Realistic proportions. Anime silhouettes are stylised on purpose.
