What Avant-garde is asking for

Avant-garde means clothing that argues with the body. Runway avant-garde is judged as sculpture: a shape is pushed past function, proportion is deliberately wrong, and the result is meant to provoke rather than flatter. That is a genuinely different scoring instinct from every other theme in the pool, and it is why so many players score badly on it — they submit their prettiest gown.

The mental test: if somebody could reasonably wear your outfit to a party, it is not avant-garde. If it looks like it required engineering, it is.

Building it without VIP

Avant-garde is one of the best free-account themes in the game, because the winning move is stacking ordinary items into an extraordinary shape rather than owning one expensive piece.

• Start with a volume base: Huge Ruffle Dress, Tutu Skirt or layered Tiered Skirt.
• Break the silhouette with something structurally wrong: Robot Arms, Robot Legs, oversized wings, a hat where a hat should not be.
• Use Butterfly Sleeves, Rose Sleeves or Baggy Sleeve Shrug to widen the shoulder line dramatically.
• Cover the face partially. A Masquerade Mask, Veil or hair over the eyes removes the “person in a nice dress” read instantly.

Layer aggressively. This is the theme where the eighteen-item limit is a real constraint rather than a ceiling you never reach.

Colour and silhouette

Keep colour almost entirely out of it. Black, bone white, or a single saturated accent against neutral. Colour competes with form, and form is what is being judged. The silhouette should be legible as a black shape on white — that is the actual test runway photographers use, and it works here.

What loses votes

• A beautiful gown. Beauty is not the assignment.
• Busy colour. It flattens the sculpture.
• Symmetry everywhere. One deliberate asymmetry lifts the whole look.
• Under-committing. A normal outfit with one strange earring reads as a normal outfit.
