What Silent Film Star is asking for

Two things have to be true at once. The clothes have to be 1920s: drop waist, straight column, fringe, long beads, a headband or cloche hat, T-bar shoes. And the whole outfit has to be greyscale, because silent film was black and white and the theme is really about looking like a frame of film stock.

The makeup is the other half. Silent film actors wore extreme makeup because the film could not read subtle contrast: heavy kohl all around the eye, dark shadow, thin arched brows, and a small dark cupid-bow lip. That face is what sells the theme even more than the dress.

Building it without VIP

• Dress: any straight, drop-waist silhouette in black or white. Roaring 20’s Dress is purpose-built but VIP; a Tassel Top over a straight Midi Skirt gives you the fringe and the column for free.
• Lace Headband worn low across the forehead, or a cloche-read hat.
• Long beaded necklaces, knotted and hanging low.
• Elegant Lace Gloves to the elbow.
• Makeup: heavy dark eye makeup all round, thin brows, small dark lip. Gothic Makeup (2024) with the colour pulled to greyscale is the closest single item.

Hair: finger waves or a sleek dark bob. Half Up Crimped Hair or Wavy Braided Bob Hair.

Colour and silhouette

Black, white, silver and charcoal — nothing else. Where an item lets you pick a colour, take saturation to zero, including on skin and hair if the game allows it. Silhouette is straight and long with no defined waist, and the hem sits at the knee or just below.

What loses votes

• Any colour. It breaks the film-stock read instantly.
• Modern makeup. Contemporary contouring reads wrong on this face.
• A defined waist. The 1920s silhouette is a column.
