What Regency Era is asking for

Regency covers roughly 1795–1837 in Britain, and one detail defines it above all others: the empire waist. The seam sits directly under the bust, and the skirt falls in a straight, soft column from there to the floor. No hoops, no bustle, no corseted hourglass. Add long gloves above the elbow, a small reticule bag, and hair pinned up with a ribbon or a light tiara.

This is the most confused theme in the whole pool, because three neighbouring themes all look “old and fancy”: Rococo is a wide pastel skirt with a tiny waist, Victorian is a dark corseted hourglass with high collars, and Regency is the narrow column with the raised waist. Judges who play regularly know the difference on sight.

Building it without VIP

• Lady In White is the closest free item to a genuine Regency column gown.
• Elegant Lace Gown is stronger but sits behind VIP; if you have it, take it.
• Build-your-own route: Silk Bodice or Basic Corset Top with a Midi Skirt or Silk Draped Skirt, then tie a ribbon high to fake the empire line.
• Gloves are non-negotiable. Elegant Lace Gloves or Ruffled Gloves finish the read.

Hair should be up with soft face-framing pieces. Soft Braids Hair or Half Up Crimped Hair both work; anything modern and sleek does not.

Colour and silhouette

Regency palettes are pale and cool: ivory, duck-egg blue, blush, sage, champagne. White dominated real Regency dress and it still reads best. Keep decoration minimal — a single ribbon, one row of embroidery at the hem. The theme rewards restraint, which makes it the opposite of Rococo despite the two being only decades apart.

What loses votes

• Waist in the wrong place. The single biggest tell.
• Too much jewellery. Regency is understated; a heavy necklace reads Victorian.
• Dark colours. Black is period-accurate only for mourning and almost always scores worse.
• Hair down. Adult women wore their hair up. Loose hair reads as costume rather than era.
