What Folklore is asking for

Folklore is the theme of traditional dress and inherited stories. Across almost every culture the vocabulary rhymes: an embroidered blouse, a full or wrapped skirt, an apron, a head covering, sturdy boots, and pattern that carries meaning rather than decoration. The palette is what natural dyes could produce — cream, madder red, indigo, forest green, wheat.

Where players go wrong is drifting into fantasy. Fairies, witches and forest spirits feel folkloric but they read as fantasy on the runway, and there are separate themes for that. Folklore’s characters are human, and the clothes are practical before they are pretty.

Building it without VIP

• Granny Dress works far better than its name suggests; read it as a traditional day dress.

Colour and silhouette

Warm, earthy and slightly faded, with embroidery as the only high-contrast element. The silhouette is modest and layered: long skirt, covered shoulders, something tied at the waist. Volume comes from layers, not from structure.

What loses votes

• Fairy wings. The single most common wrong turn.
• Sexy cuts. Folklore reads covered.
• Neon or synthetic colour. Nothing in the palette should look machine-made.
