What Visual Kei is asking for

Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系) is a Japanese rock subculture defined by how the band looks, not how it sounds. The signatures are unmistakable: hair sculpted vertically and often in unnatural colours, heavy eye makeup on any gender, and outfits that combine Victorian tailoring, punk hardware and glam-rock shine in a single look. Androgyny is central — the aesthetic deliberately refuses to sit on one side of masculine or feminine.

The mistake is treating it as generic goth. Goth is subdued and about mood; Visual Kei is loud and about performance. If your look would work at a funeral, it will not work here. It needs stage presence.

Building it without VIP

Two-colour schemes work best: black plus crimson, black plus electric blue, or white plus silver. The silhouette is layered and asymmetric — long coat over short skirt, one leg covered, one arm bare. Mixing period references on purpose (Victorian ruffle with punk buckles) is correct here, not sloppy.

What loses votes

• Plain black. Subdued reads as goth, and goth is a different prompt.
• Flat hair. The one element you cannot skip.
• No makeup. Visual Kei without dramatic eye makeup does not read at all.
